Andrea Kleine discussed her performance work, Screening Room, or, The Return of Andrea Kleine (as revealed through a re-enactment of a 1977 television program about a 'long and baffling' film by Yvonne Rainer), which premiered in December 2014. At the time, Kleine had not performed in her own work in over a decade. That absence was one of the subjects of the piece, building off of a 1977 talk-show interview with Yvonne Rainer, the choreographer who famously left dance for the world of film. Kleine portrayed Rainer as a character, herself as a character, sometimes both at the same time, sometimes neither. The authentic self lived somewhere between onstage and off, between verbatim transcripts and imaginary films, between past and present.
Andrea Kleine is a writer and performance artist whose work has spanned dance, theater, film, literature, and interdisciplinary projects. She has received numerous commissions, grants, and awards including five MacDowell Colony fellowships and the NYFA fellowship award.
